Sparks of inspiration: finding art in everyday life
My artistic journey often begins with daily life. Whether it’s a tranquil hike, a captivating ocean adventure, or the subtle shift of light during a sunset, I find inspiration everywhere. I frequently photograph land/seascapes that catch my eye, while my sunset works often blend direct observation with imaginative liberties. I am particularly drawn to light, texture and unconventional use of color. On another note, I am amazed by how patterns and unpredictability coexist in nature.
I believe inspiration must be actively sought, as it doesn't always arrive unbidden. For this reason, I paint continuously, as each new piece offers fresh insights into color, space, proportion, and light. Every artwork is an opportunity for artistic growth. For my spiritual, whimsical, and abstract works, I dedicate considerable time to conceptualizing and visualizing their direction.
Ultimately, each painting develops a life of its own; I embrace investigation throughout the process rather than rigidly adhering to initial concepts. My approach is fluid and adaptive.

From concept to canvas: Mattie's creative techniques
My initial ideas spring from both external observations and internal visions, combining imagery with imaginative inspiration to create distinctive works. For my spiritual, whimsical, and abstract pieces, I dedicate time to sketchbook practice, exploring various compositions. When working on representational art, I begin by "clothing the canvas" with an underpainting, often in burnt sienna or cadmium yellow. This underpainting helps me map out the composition and subject, forming a foundational layer for subsequent ideas. I typically approach all my paintings by building from background to foreground and from darker, cooler tones to lighter, warmer ones. My process consistently moves from general concepts to specificity, starting with larger shapes and gradually refining them with intricate details. I maintain a fluid approach to each artwork, allowing ideas to evolve through exploration. I treat my paintings like scientific experiments, constantly asking "what if" questions and acting upon those inquiries.

Evoking emotion: the impact of art
When viewers engage with my nature-inspired and spiritual artworks, I hope viewers experience feelings of serenity, sublimity, and awe. I aim for my work to provoke personal questions within the viewer. Ultimately, the interpretation of art rests with the individual, regardless of the artist's initial intent.
